You can use Crunch’s AI-powered search to find your datasets, variables, and documents in Crunch. AI-powered search allows you to use natural language to search for data, which means you can type your search results the same way you would normally speak.
You can also perform a keyword-only search when your entire search query is in quotation marks. All AI search results will be excluded and only results with an exact keyword will be returned. The entire search query must be in quotation marks for this to work. For example, if you search for "United States" only results with the exact keyword "United States" are returned.
Enabling AI-powered search
AI-powered search is currently available to all users in beta. To enable the AI powered search, click the toggle beside AI beta in the search bar:

To turn off AI-powered search, click the toggle again to revert to the legacy keyword search.
Searching for a dataset
To search for a dataset:
- Locate the search bar on the top right of the navigation bar in Crunch. Enter your search query and click Enter.

Select the Datasets tab. Select a date filter if applicable:
The dataset name for each search result appears in search. If there are matching variables in the dataset, a link showing relevant variables appears below the dataset name.

Click the link to expand the results:

- Click the dataset or the variable name to open the dataset in the same window. If you hover over the results, a
button appears to the right of each result. Click this button to open the search results in a new tab. - To close the search window, click the
button in the search bar to the right of your search query.
Searching for variables
To search for a variable:
- Locate the search bar on the top right of the navigation bar in Crunch. Enter your search query and click Enter.

Select the Variables tab. Select a date filter if applicable:
The variable name for each search result appears in the results. The most top-ranked or most recent dataset with the variable appears below the variable name. If there are matching variables in more than one dataset, a link showing other datasets appears.

- Click the variable or the dataset name to open the variable in the same window. If you hover over the results, a
button appears to the right of each result. Click this button to open the search results in a new tab. - To close the search window, click the
button in the search bar to the right of your search query.
Searching for documents
To search for a document:
- Locate the search bar on the top right of the navigation bar in Crunch. Enter your search query and click Enter.

Select the Documents tab. Select a date filter if applicable:
The document name for each search result appears in the results.

To see all text matches in the document, click the link showing the number of occurrences to see the specific matches in the document:

- Click the document name or the text match to open the document in the same window. If you hover over the results, a
button appears to the right of each result. Click this button to open the search results in a new tab. - To close the search window, click the
button in the search bar to the right of your search query.
Boolean search
Crunch supports boolean search, a technique that uses operators AND, OR, and NOT to combine keywords and refine search results. To use Boolean search in Crunch, type two or more keywords separated by AND, OR, or NOT (must be in uppercase). Boolean search works for Variable, Dataset, and Document search:

Providing feedback on your search results
To provide feedback:
- At the bottom of your search results, click the thumbs up to leave positive feedback or click the thumbs down button to leave constructive feedback.
- Optionally, enter a message to provide Crunch with some additional information.

Click Submit feedback to submit the response.
