Each dataset folder in Crunch belongs to a single organization. Users from other organizations can be granted access to those folders, but users in other organizations cannot move those datasets, meaning that if an organization had both their own data and data provided by another Crunch customer, those would necessarily be in two different folders whose access would need to be managed by two different people.
A Crunch data exchange allows a data owner to make dataset views available to another organization, meaning that organization can put that view into their own folders, allowing them to manage access and keep all related data in one place.
A data exchange allows one organization (the sender) to make dataset views available to another organization (the receiver). Each data exchange specifies exactly one sender and one receiver. Once they have received a view through the exchange, the receiver can move it to any folder in their organization, allowing users to access data from multiple sources seamlessly.

How to put a dataset view into a data exchange
Once a dataset exchange has been set up with the help of the Crunch support staff, the sender can move one or more views into it. Note that only dataset views can be shared via an exchange — the original dataset remains in the sender’s organization. Moving a view into an exchange works similarly to moving a dataset into a folder:
- Locate or create a dataset view. Verify the view exposes the correct data and has an appropriate name and description. See the following article for more information about creating views:
- Move the view into the exchange just as if you were moving a dataset into a folder. See the following article for more information:
- Open the exchange by clicking it in the sidebar and verify that the view is available. All users who have access to the exchange from the receiving organization can now see the dataset view and move the view into their folder structure.
How to recall a view from a data exchange
Dataset views can only be recalled from an exchange if the receiving organization has not yet moved the view out of the exchange into their folder structure. To recall a view:
- Navigate to the data exchange and locate the dataset view.
- Move the view out of the view into one of your organization’s folders. You can drag and drop or click on the caret menu at the end of the view name and use ‘Move to’.
- Once the view has been moved to a folder in your organization, you can open the view. The receiving organization will no longer see the view in the data exchange.
Managing access to the data exchange
- Users from the receiving organization cannot see or manage users from the sending organization and vice versa.
- Only existing users in Crunch can be granted to the data exchange.
- You cannot remove your own data exchange permissions.
The sender can grant one or more users access to the data exchange. These users can:
- Add dataset views to the exchange to give the receiver access to them
- Manage which users in the sending organization have access to the exchange
Managing access to an exchange is just like managing access to a folder in your organization:
- Navigate to the exchange in the sidebar.
- Click the silhouette icon at the top to view and manage permissions to this exchange.
- Select +Add users to add a new user.
- Enter the user’s email address and click Add user. The user will now have access to the exchange.
- To remove a user, hover over the user and an x will appear. Click the x to remove the user.
