A subtotal is used when you would like to create summary calculations in a categorical variable, categorical array, or multiple response variable, such as a Top 2 or Bottom 2. Subtotals appear as additional rows or columns in bold, shown at the top of the variable by default.
In the case of multiple response variables, a subtotal is defined as "at least one mention of", which takes the "ORNM" (OR Not Missing) logic - meaning that if there are any valid cases across the contributing subvariables, it will be considered in the calculation.
Subtotals can be shown or hidden in tables, charts, and graphs using the Display Controller (See: Graphing Subtotals and Differences).
