Filters are a key analytic feature in any project, allowing you to show a subset of the data that matches a specified set of values for specified variables.
There are a few ways to create filters in Crunch:
- Make filters on the fly by dragging variables from the Variable Sidebar to the Filter by dropzone at the top of the main window of Crunch.
- Create more complicated filters with the Filter Builder, using Boolean logic and the ability to select more than one category from a variable.
A data processing department may choose to set up a variety of filters in a dataset in advance of a researcher working in Crunch.
Note: A filter is not stored as a variable in Crunch, it is a definition that is derived from variables in the dataset. The resulting filter is an artifact of the dataset. If building a filter in the web app using the Filter Builder, there is an option to save the definition as a variable (categorical variable with "Selected"/"Other" options), as a filter, or as both a variable and a filter. If you choose to only save it as a variable, the resultant variable by itself is not a filter, though it can be dragged to the Filter by dropzone to create one.
