All of your questions in Qualtrics are easily mapped into Crunch variables. The tables described in this article show you a Qualtrics example on the left and how it maps into Crunch on the right.

Basic mappings
Single and multiple answer variables
Description | ||
Single Answer | Categorical variable
Single Answer questions in Qualtrics map to categorical variables. No numeric values are set unless a “score” is defined on the Qualtrics survey.
Multiple Answer | Multiple response
Multiple Answer questions in Qualtrics use logically typed categorical to represent a multiple response (which is a categorical array with a selected value). |
Text variables
Description | ||
Text Entry | Text variable
Text Entry questions in Qualtrics are by default represented as a single "text" variable. Text Entry types come with a variety of customizations which we handle in the Qualtrics Integration.
Text Entry (Numeric) | Numeric variable
Text entries provide content validation methods in order to require a specific type of answer. In cases where that validation requirement is "Numeric Only" we represent the responses as numerics.
Text Entry (Form Field)
Within a folder in the Crunch app | The text entry (form field) provides users with the ability to fill out an Entire form field within a question. These question types are divided by form field entry and the set of form fields is placed within a folder in the crunch app. |
Matrix variables
Description | ||
Matrix — Single Answer | Categorical arrays
Each statement is considered a subcategory within the overarching metadata of the collective question.
Matrix — Multiple Answer | Numeric variable
Multiple Answer Matrix Questions (MAMQs) are represented as a series of categorical arrays. Each categorical array in a MAMQ encompasses a single statement, with each subcategory listed as a logically typed categorical array. The set of Statements is then encompassed with a folder by the Crunch app.
Matrix — Multiple Answer, Text Entry | Multiple text variables within a folder
Matrix questions provide the option to allow for text entry. When the form field is text, we hand this in the integration by importing each Matrix[i,j] text response as an individual variable. This results In a folder of folders in the application, with the outer folder encompassing the collective question, and the inner folder encompassing each individual Statement. Variables within the Statement folder represent the responses enumerated by column.
Matrix — Multiple Answer, Text Entry (Numeric) | Multiple numeric arrays within a folder
Text entries can have content validation so that only numbers are valid responses. We store these questions as a series of Numeric Arrays, where each Statement is an individual Numeric Array. The series is then encapsulated into a folder for the encompassing question. |
Sliders
Description | ||
Default Sliders | Numeric array
Each "Slider" is represented as a subvariable within the numeric array.
Sliders — Snap to Grid | Categorical array
Multiple Answer Matrix Questions (MAMQs) are represented as a series of categorical arrays. Each categorical array in a MAMQ encompasses a single statement, with each subcategory listed as a logically typed categorical array. The set of Statements is then encompassed with a folder by the Crunch app.
Rank Order | ||
If the survey creator selects “Must rank all” Crunch creates a categorical array: |
Rank Order questions in Qualtrics are mapped to categorical arrays. Each statement in the rank order question is an individual subvariable, and each subvariable is categorized by the selected rank label.
Side by Side | ||
(Crunch Screenshot: Side by Side) | Side-by-side questions in Qualtrics are effectively a set of questions wrapped within an overarching question. As such, we represent these questions as a folder of questions, with each folder containing questions mapping back to their representative standard question. For example, the above side-by-side contains a "Text Entry" type in Column 1, and a Text Entry (Numeric) type in Column 2. Crunch catalogs each Column as its own variable. |
Qualtrics specialty questions
Description | ||
Constant Sum | ||
(Crunch Screenshot: Constant Sum) | The constant sum question is effectively a slider type with the added enforcement of that the sum of the sliders is pegged to a set value. They are effectively handled in the same way that sliders are handled, being imported into crunch as a numeric array.
Pick, Group, and Rank | ||
and a few more: |
Pick, Group, and Rank question types are parsed by the integration both with respect to how the individual items were grouped, as well as how the individual groups were ranked. These results are presented in the crunch app under the folders "items grouped" and "groups ranked" respectively.
Hot Spot | ||
The Hot Spot question type provides survey respondents the potential to select regions on an image and label these regions as On/Off or Like/Dislike/Neutral. The result in crunch is a categorical array with each region being categorized via their On/Off or Like/Dislike/Neutral labels.
Heat Map | ||
The Heat Map question type allows survey respondents to click on images and have their clicks correspond to questionnaire entries. The results in crunch are a folder of numeric arrays for the x/y coordinates for each click, and then if any regions are selected those are populated within a second categorical array.
Graphic Slider | ||
The graphical sliders in Qualtrics allow survey respondents to select via a slider the response reflected by a built-in graphic. The sliders are all enumerated however so we ultimately represent these question types as categoricals.
Drill Down | ||
(Crunch Screenshot: Drill Down) | The graphical sliders in Qualtrics allow survey respondents to select via a slider the response reflected by a built-in graphic. The sliders are all enumerated however so we ultimately represent these question types as categoricals.
Net Promoter Score | ||
(Qualtrics Screenshot: Net Promoter Score) | (Crunch Screenshot: Net Promoter Score) | Numeric values for categories should come from the "scoring". |
More advanced question types
Description | ||
Timing | ||
(Crunch Screenshot: Timing) | Timing provides deltas for how long a survey respondent interacts with a survey page. The information provided includes the categories "First Click", "Last Click", "Page Submit", and "Click count". These four values are all individual numerics containerized within a numeric array.
Meta Info Question | ||
(Crunch Screenshot: User Information) |
This question (also called User Information) provides survey builders the ability to collect basic information about their respondents, such as their operating system and browser. Currently, the Qualtrics API provides the browser, os, version, and resolution data.
File Upload | ||
Qualtrics provides a file upload mechanism for their surveys; currently, this question type is "skipped" when imported into Crunch since it’s not supported. |
Survey administration questions
The survey administration questions are a set of questions that are included with every import, which provides general information regarding the respondent and the response.
